Remembering Mets History (2017) Another Wilmer Flores' Walk Off HR

Saturday July 22nd, 2017: On this night, Terry Collins struggling New York Mets (45-50) would host Bob Melvin's last place Oakland Athletics (43-54) in an interleague game at Citi Field.

The Mets were 12.5 games back of Washington in third place, they would finish a disappointing fourth (70-92).

A Citi Field crowd of 39,629 showed up to see the Mets Zack Wheeler (3-7) take on Sean Manaea (6-3). Manaea would win 12 games that season (12-10) & the next (12-9).

Zack Wheeler had a nightmare of a 1st inning, as the Athletics sent nine men to the plate scoring four runs on three hits, starting out with a lead off HR by Matthew Joyce. Wheeler then walked Marcis Semien & he stole second.

Kris Davis would single in Semien. Jed Lowrie walked & then Bruce Maxwell doubled scoring Davis. Matt Chapman's sac fly, quickly put the Mets in a 4-0 hole.

Matt Chapman added a solo HR in the 3rd making it 5-0 Oakland.

Oakland's Sean Manaea held the Mets scoreless into the 6th inning, scattering five hits. Then Wilmer Flores led off the inning with a double. Jay Bruce then hit his team leading 25th HR of the year, getting the Mets a bit closer 5-2. He also collected his team best 65th RBI.

With one out Jose Reyes tripled, his second of the season & the 123rd triple in his career. Reyes holds the All time Mets  record with 113.

Reyes was brought in by Travis d'Arnaud's single to left field. Then with two outs, Michael Conforto doubled to left field, d'Arnaud scored and it was now a one run game.

In the home 8th, T.J. Rivera led off with a single to left field, but he was erased when Jose Reyes grounded into a double play.

Travis d'Arnaud then doubled to left field, his third hit of the night. Lucas Duda came through with a base hit up the middle, tying the game at five.

The Mets bullpen of Josh Smoker, Josh Edgin & Hansel Robles held down the Athletics for three scoreless innings.

In the home 9th, Simon Castro came on to pitch for Oakland. He got the first two outs as Asdrubal Cabrera lined out & Yoenis Cespedes struck out.

Wilmer Flores then came up blasting a walk off HR giving the Mets a 6-5 win. It was Flores 9th HR of the year.

It was Wilmer's sixth RBI walk off hit of his career & his second career walk off HR. In his Mets career he would have ten walk off hits & RBIs.

It was the Mets fourth win in a row, sadly their second longest win streak of 2017.
