Remembering Mets History (1967): Jerry Buchek Has Back to Back Walk Off Hits & A Six RBI Night

Friday September 22nd, 1967: Salty Parkers tenth place Mets (58-95) hosted Grady Hatton's ninth place Houston Astros (64-90) for a double header, in front of 13,342 at Shea Stadium. 

On this night a forgotten Mets short stop, in a time before Bud Harrelson took over the spot, Jerry Buchek, had the biggest night of his career & followed up with a walk off hit.


Starting Lineups




 Tug McGraw was the Mets starter on this night up, against Houston's Wade Blasingame.

In the home 1st, Amos Otis walked & Eddie Kranepool singled. Bob Johnson followed with an RBI single, making it 1-0. Buchek ended the inning grounding out into a double play.

In the 8th inning, with the Mets down 4-2, Bob Johnson & Tommy Davis both singled. Jerry Buchek followed with a three run HR putting the Mets ahead 5-4. It was Buchek's 12th HR of the year.
In the top of the 9th Mets pitcher Jack Fisher gave up the lead when the Astros' Don Adlesh singled home Rusty Staub with the tying run.

 The game went to extra innings. In the home 10th Bob Johnson doubled & Cleon Jones walked. Jerry Buchek stepped in against the Astro's Tom Dukes. Amazingly Buchek, hit his second three run HR of the night. A walk off game winner HR# thirteen on the year.

 Buchek's six RBIs were the most in a game for a Met player that season & one of the highest totals in their short history. It was an exciting night for the young Mets.




Saturday, September 23rd 1967: Tonight the exciting Mets Rookie, Tom Seaver (15-12) was on the mound for Salty Parkers New York Mets (59-95) taking on Graddy Hatton's Houston Astros & pitcher Dave Guisti.

A small crowd of 11,021 fans were on hand at Shea Stadium.




The Mets 1967 Rookie of the Year, Tom Seaver went out & pitched a three hit shut out masterpiece. Seaver struck out nine batters along the way & walked three.  The Houston pitchers; Dave Guisti & reliever; Dave Eilers matched Seaver with zero's, shutting out the Mets as well for eight innings.

In the bottom of the 9th, Larry Sherry came in to pitch for Houston. The Mets Bob Johnson led off with a double & Ed Kranepool was walked. Ron Swoboda then reached on an infield single to load the bases. That set the stage for Jerry Buchek. Buchek delivered with a game winning single, his second walk off hit in two nights.

 Jerry Buchek played two seasons for the Mets, he was the clubs main short stop in 1967. That year he played in 124 games, coming in second on the club in HRs with 14, while driving in 41 runs batting .236 & striking out 101 times.

Wow, I remember this game!! Jerry Buchek was very good at times and streaky as I remember. This was right before the Mets took off to capture the world. Seaver also had hard luck his first two years as the Mets weren't exactly scoring many runs in those days. His record clearly should have been 20 game seasons both '67 and '68 had they scored more for him. Exactly what Jake deGromm is going thru now.

Remembering Vixen Founder / Guitarist; Jan Kuehnemund (1961-2013)

centerfieldmaz was shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Jan Kuehnemund, the founding member of the all female metal band Vixen. Jan was a fantastic guitarist, song writer & women pioneer in Heavy Metal. I am a huge fan of hard rock all girl bands & Vixen were one my long time favorites. Janice Lynn Kuehnemund was born November 18th, 1961 in St. Paul Minnesota. The female guitarist formed one of the first all female Metal bands in Minnesota with singer Janet Gardner while in high school in 1980. By 1985 they moved the band to Los Angles California, to be part of the Heavy Metal scene. In 1987 the classic Vixen line up of Jan Kuehnemund (lead guitar) Janet Gardner (vocals/ guitar) Share Pederson (bass) & Roxy Petrucci (drums) formed & released their debut album the following year. Remembering Bobby Ojeda's Tragic Boating Accident (1993)

Steve Olin, Tim Crews & Bob Ojeda March 22 nd 1993: was an off day from Spring Training, for three Cleveland Indians pitchers; Former Mets 1986 World Champion pitcher; Bobby Ojeda, Tim Crews & Steve Olin. The three friends, took out an 18-foot open-air bass boat & went out fishing & gator hunting in the darkness of the evening on Lake Nellie in Clermont, Florida. Tragedy struck, when the boat rammed into a private dock that jutted out some 250 feet into the still waters. Two other Cleveland Indians personnel had arrived to meet the fishing party just as the horror took place. They heard Bob Ojeda saying they needed help. The two men jumped into the water and called out for someone to call 911. 27 year old pitcher; Steve Olin was killed instantly. 31 year old pitcher; Tim Crews was alive but was struggling to breathe suffering from massive head wounds. The History of Yogi Berra & the Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Drink

Yogi Berra & Yoo-Hoo's  history go back to the 1950's. Yogi had met the Oliveri Family, the owners of the Yoo-Hoo company at a Country Club function near his home in New Jersey. Natale Olivieri started bottling the chocolate drink in 1928 in Garfield, w Jersey. By the late 1950's he Yoo-Hoo product wasn't selling all that well. Mr. Olivieri asked for Yogi's opinion at the new Jersey function. Berra said he actually liked the soft drink & started promoting it along with his teammates. Soon Yogi put Yoo-Hoo on the map, appearing in commercials, advertisements and supermarkets promotions.  Berra would show up at the factory in Carlstadt, New Jersey & became a hero to the factory workers. He soon became a Vice President of the company owning a large amount of Yoo-Hoo stock. Remembering Mets History (1979) SNL's Chico Escuela Visits Mets Spring Training & Attempts a Career Comeback

Bill Murray interviews (Garrett Morris) Chico Escuela In March 1979, original Saturday Night Live cast member; Garrett Morris joined the Mets at Miller Huggins Field for Spring Training. At the time the Mets were still holding Spring Training in St. Petersburg Florida.  Garrett Morris was posing as  the fictional Mets player, Chico Escuela who wore uniform #5 (cinque).  Escuela was doing his famous spoof of the Latin players of the time, posing as a popular infielder from the Dominican Republic that didn't speak much English. His legendary catch phrase was "baseball been berry- berry good to me". "baseball been berry-berry good... to me" The Chico Escuela character appeared nine times during on SNL's fourth & fifth seasons. He debuted on December 9th, 1978, in a Knight of Columbus sketch as a guest speaker.
