Remembering Mets History (2015): World Series Game #4: Mets In A Big Hole Down Three Games To One
Saturday October 31st, 2015 World Series Game #4- Citi Field Queens, New York
With what hat seemed like the momentum pendulum swinging the Mets way, an excited Citi Field crowd piled in to see yet another Mets Rookie sensation; Steven Matz (4-0 / 2.27 ERA / 34 Ks) face off against veteran Chris Young (11-6 / 3.06 ERA / 83 Ks).
It started out great for the Mets, Matz shut out the Royals through the first four innings with a great curve ball & a good fast ball. He was given a two run lead as well as Rookie Michael Conforto hit a 3rd inning HR making it 1-0.
Then the Mets scraped up another run with a Wilmer Flores single, a Matz sac bunt & a sac fly by Curtis Granderson. Right fielder Alex Rios thought there were two outs & helped the issue. It was a nice 2-0 Met lead.
In the 5th Conforto homered for the second time, as he made Terry Collins look like a genius by sticking to him. It was his first HR off a left hander. It was 3-1 New York with a loud crowd behind them.
Trivia: The only other Met to hit two HRs in a World Series game was Gary Carter in Game #4 of the 1986 World Series.
The Royals got a run in the 5th on a Salvador Perez double & an Alex Gordon single that Yoenis Cespedes kicked in center field.
In the top of 6th, Collins may have stuck with Matz too long, Ben Zobrist doubled & Lorenzo Cain singled him in making it 3-2.
Jonathon Neise & Bartolo Colon came on in good relief efforts to end the inning. Colon struck out Perez with a runner on third to add to his legacy.
Addison Reed gave the Mets another good inning in the 7th. But in the 8th KC struck doing what they do best coming back late.
Tyler Clippard got an out & then gave the Royals two free passes. He was done. Terry Collins went to Jeruys Familia for a five out save opportunity.
With two on it wasn't to be, a routine little bouncer to second went through the legs of Daniel Murphy, all his playoff heroics forgotten.
It seemed right there at that point it was to be the last time (albeit one more loss) that we'd see Murph in a Mets uniform.
After that crucial run scored the flood gates were open. The next hit went by Murph too, a tougher play yes but it was like hitting shots off a pinball machine to his right, to his left. KC scored three times & it was over at 5-3. The Mets could not come back.
Quotes: Daniel Murphy- "I tried to one-hand it. It probably deserved to be two-handed. I just misplayed it. It went right under my glove. They made us pay for it. It put us in a really bad spot, and that's frustrating."
They now trail the world series three games to one. If there is another world series miracle in the Mets life time, they sure need it now.
Quotes: David Wright- “There’s only way to respond. We got our backs up against the all and we’ve got to get it done.”
