Remembering Mets History: (2016) David Wright's Walk Off Places Him First On Mets All Time Walk Off List
Saturday May 21st, 2016: The Mets (23-18) had taken the opener in this series against the Milwaukee Brewers (18-24) after a rough week losing two of three to the Washington Nationals at home, and a skip of losing six of seven. the previous week. Not a good week for the defending N.L. Champions.
Curtis Granderson led off the game with yet another home run, his second this week, his 8th on the year. But the Brewers came back right away as Ramon Flores hit his first career HR off Jacob deGrom to put Milwaukee up 2-1. They tacked on two more in the 4th inning as Flores added a sac fly & Jonathann Villare had an RBI single.
In the home 4th Yoenis Cespedes singled & with Neil Walker up Pitcher Zach Davis threw a wild pitch advancing Cespedes. Asdrubal Cabrera then singled him in to make it 4-2.
In the 6th, Cespedes continued to show how good & important he is to this team, as he belted his club leading 14th HR of the year, a two run shot tying the game at four.
That took the game into the 9th inning, all tied up as the rains fell on Citi Field. Michael Blazek came in to pitch for the Brewers, a pitcher known to have control issues. Eric Campbell led off with his second hit of the night & then Kevin Plawecki walked. After a coaching visit to the mound, Matt Reynolds sacrificed the runners over. The Brewers decided to then walk Granderson to get to the struggling team captain David Wright.
As broadcaster Howie Rose said, everyone in the organization & the fans as well feel for Wright with the struggles he's going through. He has been striking out at a rate higher than any point in his career, with 50 K's in just 121 at bats, while posting a .220 average. David must have felt so slighted as the Brewers chose to pitch to around Granderson to get to him.
But he worked the count to 3-0 as Blazek was all over the place. Then knowing he was going to get a pitch to hit, Wright drove a single to Wright center field, sending Howie Rose on the radio, as well as 39,688 fans at Citi into a frenzy. The Mets won it on Wright's walkf off single, redemption for the Met Captain.
Trivia: The walk off hit put David Wright first on the Mets all-time list in that category, passing Kevin McReynolds whom he had shared the honors with. It was Wright's first walk off hit since May of 2012, dour years ago. The walk off was the Mets first since Wilmer Flores memorable HR last July.
Quotes- David Wright: “I think you take that personally, for sure. Of course, you take it personally where you maybe get a little more locked in, a little more focused, if that’s even possible with the game on the line. You want to prove that’s the wrong decision. These guys have picked me up so much this year that it’s nice to be able to return the favor a little bit and do something positive to allow us to celebrate in here after the game."
