Remembering Mets History (2005) David Wright Has a Six RBI Night In San Diego -the Night After Making the Catch of The Year

Wednesday August 10th, 2005: Although the Mets were in fifth place, Willie Randolph's team was playing its best baseball since the pennant season of 2000. They were 58-55 just seven- and one-half games out of first place. Tonight, they were out west to San Diego, taking on Bruce Bochy's first place Padres (57-56).

The Padres would win the NL Western Division that year & again the following season in 2006. Both times they would fall to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS.

A big crowd of 43,162 came out to Petco Park to see The Mets Kris Benson (7-4) went up against the Padres Brian Lawrence (6-11).

In the 1st inning, Miquel Cairo singled & Carlos Beltran was hit by a pitch. David Wright singled to bring in Miquel Cairo with the games first run & his first RBI of his big night.

With Mike Piazza up next, Carlos Beltran stole home making it 2-0.

In the 3rd Cairo doubled to start the inning. Next Carlos Beltran drew a walk. After Cliff Floyd flew out, Davis Wright doubled down the left field line bringing in both runners, making it a 4-0 game, with his second & third RBIs of the night. Wright scored on Jose Offerman's base hit.

In the 4th, Carlos Beltran doubled down the left field line & Cliff Floyd was intentionally walked.

Wright came up with the two men on & hit his 17th HR of the year, a three-run shot putting the Mets up 8-0. For Wright it added up to six RBIs on the night, a season high & a career best he would do three times.

Trivia: On August 5th, 2004, he drove in six runs led by a three run HR, in an 11-6 win over the Brewers in Milwaukee. He would match that high with two HRs & driving in six runs on September 12th, 2009, in a 10-9 win at Philadelphia.

This HR finally got Padre pitcher; Brian Lawrence knocked out of the game. In 3.2 innings, he allowed Eight runs on eight hits, two walks & two Ks as ERA went to 4.80.

Kris Benson went out having one of his best nights in a Mets uniform. Benson would pitch into the 9th inning, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out six batters, earning his eighth win of the year (8-4).

Danny Graves would come on to finish the game out.

Trivia: David Wright would finish the year batting .306 the first of five straight .300 plus seasons for Wright. He would drive in 102 runs the first of four straight 100 plus RBI seasons.

Play of the Year: The previous night Wright had made what was voted on as the MLB play of the year, making a bare-handed catch in shallow left field on a Brian Giles pop up.
