Remembering Mets History: (2007) Tom Glavine Wins 300th Career Game

Sunday August 5th, 2007: The sell out crowd at Wrigley Field in Chicago was host to the First place New York Mets (63-48) & second place hometown Cubs (58-52) on ESPN's Sunday Night baseball.

All the fan fare was about Tom Glavine going for his 300th career win. Just a few nights earlier Glavine had left the mound in Milwaukee with a lead, but didn't get credit for the victory.

On this night in Chicago, Glavine went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and when he left the mound, even the friendly confines of Wrigley Field gave him a standing ovation.

Quotes:  "As a player and a person, you want people to respect you and respect what you're about," Glavine said. "The response tonight was overwhelming. That's something you never expect to hear on the road."

Glavine became the 23rd pitcher in MLB history to win 300 games. It was his Glavine's tenth victory of the year against six losses.

The Mets manager, Willie Randolph used five other Met pitchers after Glavine's exit, as Billy Wagner closed out the 8-3 victory.

Kristine Glavine
Glavine helped out his own cause in the 2nd inning. LWith outs, Lastings Milledge walked & stole second. Glavine the drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single off Cubs pitcher, Jason Marquis.

The Mets offensive star of the game that night was Carlos Delgado. In the 5th with Luis Castillo on board, Delgado doubled to make it 2-0. He was driven in by his friend Shawn Green, as Green doubled off the Ivy, making it 3-0 Mets.

Tom Glavine was breathing a bit easier.

In the top of the 6th, Lastings Milledge doubled & was brought home by Jose Reyes. Reyes would advance on Luis Castillo's base hit & then stole third base. Then, Delgado grounded to second base scoring Reyes, as New York & Glavine were up 5-0.

In the home 6th, the Cubs Derek Lee & Aramis Ramirez both doubled scoring the Cubs first run.

In the 7th, Glavine got Mark DeRosa to ground out & then Angel Pagan doubled to left. Willie Randolph came out & removed Glavine on his historic night.

Pedro Feliciano got an out but then gave up a run, charged to Glavine when Mike Fontenot doubled.

The Mets scored two more in the 8th inning. Luis Castillo & David Wright both hit singles.

Delgado then doubled bringing in another run. Paul Loduca also doubled, making it 7-3 Mets.

Delgado added a sac fly RBI in the 9th, scoring Reyes with the Mets 8th run of the night. Delgado would drive in four runs, going 2-4 with a walk & a sacrifice fly. Jose Reyes went 3-6 on the night, with an RBI, two runs scored & his league leading 11th triple.

Glavine would go 6.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits, one strike out & one walk. He would earned his tenth win of the year, going 10-6. For 2007 Glavine went 13-8 with a 4.45 ERA with 89 Ks & 64 walks in 200 innings pitched.

It was his last season in New York, as he ended his career back in Atlanta the next season.
