Remembering Mets History (1999) Mets Tie Club Record With Six HRs

Tuesday June 15th, 1999: Bobby Valentine's second place Mets (34-30) went to Cincinnati to face Jack McKeon's third place Reds (32-28) in front of 18,248 at Cinergy Field.

Tonight, the Reds sent Brett Tomko to the mound, to face the Mets right hander, Rick Reed. The Mets would get hot & win nine out of their next ten games, giving them a winning stretch of 16-3 from June 6th to June 25th.

They would win 97 games on the year, winning the NL wild card crown.

This game was a preview of a tie breaker between the Mets & the Reds that would decide the NL Wild Card winner in October.

For Rick Reed, he would have a good night, allowing just two runs over eight innings of work. He struck out five, walked two & scattered eight hits along the way, earning his fourth win of the year (4-3). But tonight it was all about the Mets offense.

The Mets battered Brett Tomko around right away, in the 1st inning. Rickey Henderson led off the game with a HR, his MLB record 74th HR to lead off a game.

Edgardo Alfonzo then walked. John Olerud & Mike Piazza followed with back-to-back HRs putting the Mets quickly ahead 4-0. For Olerud it was HR #11 & Piazza was leading the club with his 14 HRs.

In the 5th inning, with one out, Alfonzo connected with his 9th HR of the year making it 5-1 Mets.

In the 6th inning, the Mets Matt Franco added another HR, the Mets fifth HR  on the night making it 6-1.

The wild Mets 7th inning, was another biggie, Henderson hit his second HR of the night as he led off the inning with his fifth long ball of the year.

That HR tied a Mets franchise record at the time, with six HRs on the night.

The Mets would put up five more runs in that 7th inning, sending nine batters to the plate with five more hits.

Edgardo Alfonzo walked & Jon Olerud singled. Mike Piazza flew out & Brian Mcrae struck out. Now with two outs, Matt Franco singled home Alfonzo. Roger Cedeno doubled scoring Olerud & Franco. Rey Ordonez then drove in Cedeno with a base hit, completing the five run inning. The  Mets went on to an 11-3 victory.

Trivia: On April 19th 2005, the Mets would hit seven HRs in a game. Jose Reyes & Carlos Diaz both hit two HRs each, David Wright, Mike Piazza & Doug Mientkiewicz would all hit one.

On August 25th 2015, the Mets led by Terry Collins would set a new franchise record with eight HRs in a game, as David Wright, Juan Lagares, Wilmer Flores, Travis D'Arnaud, Michael Cuddyer, Daniel Murphy & Yoenis Cespedes all homered.
