Remembering Mets History (2024) Mets Sweep Subway Series with Five HRs & Lindor's Five RBI Night

Wednesday July 24th, 2024: The Mets entered the night looking to sweep the four game 2024 subway series. Last month the Mets took both games at Citi Field & were looking to do the same in the Bronx.

Carlos Mendoza sent Sean Manaea (6-4) to the mound to face Gerit Cole (3-1). The Mets had roughed up Cole last month at Citi Field for six runs on seven hits in just four innings of work.

A big crowd of 48,760 settled in on a humid night as the Mets went out trying to continue their dominance of the AL New York team as well as their winning. Since June 1st they have one of baseball best teams, going 28-14.

In the top of the 3rd, The Mets got their first HR of the night, as Tyrone Taylor hit his sixth of the
year to tie up the game. Francisco Lindor then singled for his first hit of the night, as he was just getting started.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Juan Soto hit a solo shot to put the Mets behind for the last time.

In the top of the 4th, J.D. Martinez led off with a base hit to left field. Then Pete Alonso hit a two run HR putting the Mets ahead 3-2. For Pete it was his 20th HR of the season, but just his third of the month.

In the top of the 5th, Tyrone Taylor collected his third hit of the night to lead off the inning.

The hot hitting Francisco Lindor then blasted his 20th HR of the season, the third Mets HR of the night off Cole. The HR came from the switch hitting Lindor batting left-handed. The Mets had a 5-2 lead.

Candy for His Daughter: After his HR he gave his daughter some bubble gum from the dugout, as she & the Lindor family had seats in the first row alongside the Mets dugout.

In the top of the 6th, the hot hitting Jeff McNeil hit his 15th double of the year, then was brought home by Tyrone Taylor as he collected his third hit of the night, making it 6-2. As Gerit Cole exited he had given up six runs on eight hits & three Mets HRs.

Trivia: In two games against the Mets, he allowed 12 runs on 15 hits in 9.2 innings taking two losses.

In the bottom of the 6th, Tyrone Taylor who was in the lineup for Harrison Bader tonight, added
to his big night with a spectacular diving catch to rob Alex Verdugo of a hit.

The Mets would have a tremendous 8th inning, batting around & sending 11 men to the plate, scoring six more runs, with five hits along with two more HRs. Mark Vientos led off with a HR, his 13th of the year. It was Vientos third subway series HR this season as well.

Jeff McNeil hit his second double of the night after a misplay in right field by Juan Soto. It was Jeff's 16th double of the year. After another pitching change, Jose Iglesias singled, then Tyrone Taylor reached on a fielder's choice & a throwing error by third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera allowed McNeil to score the Mets eighth run.

Lindor's Five RBI Night: Francisco Lindor continued his hot hitting & making a statement as he hit his second HR of the night, a three-run shot off Caleb Ferguson.

This one came batting right-handed as he hit HRs from both sides of the plate tonight. Lindor had a season high five RBIs on the night. It was his second multi- HR game in the last three days, as he has eight RBIs in the last three games. In the month of July, he has 8 HRs & 20 RBIs.

Brandon Nimmo then walked & the AL New York team made another pitching change. Ben Gamel was brought in to run for Nimmo. J.D. Martinez then doubled for his 16th two bagger of the year.

Pete Alonso drew a walk & Mark Vientos collected his second RBI of the game with a sac fly to right field. Vientos raised his average to .290 on the season as well.

The Mets cruised to an easy 12-3 victory, as the swept the 2024 version of the subway series, two at home & two in the Bronx. In the four games the Mets put up 36 runs with 46 hits with 13 HRs.
