(2024) Mets Take Three of Four from Phillies on Final Homestand- Move to Second Spot in Wild Card Race

Sunday September 22nd, 2024: With seven games to go, the Mets were clinging to a 1.5 game lead over the Braves for the third wild card spot.

Tonight, in the final game of the regular season, the Mets hosted the Phillies trying to take two of three in the big series.

This could very well be the last regular season home game for Pete Alonso whose contract is up this year. The Citi Fans would give him a big ovation in his first at bat, in which he acknowledged them with a tip of the helmet.

Quotes- Pete Alonso: "It was really special & I mean
that's something that you can't, I mean it's
right out of a storybook for me.
So, it's truly, remarkable to be able to see that, to see & feel that reaction & appreciation from a packed house like that.

For the Phillies a win would clinch the NL Eastern title, their first divisional title since 2011.

The Mets went at it again without Francisco Lindor who is still out with a bad back.

It was a big game, on this Sunday Night ESPN Baseball broadcast. An excited sellout crowd of 43,139 filled Citi Field as Carlos Mendoza sent Tylor Megill (4-5) up against Rob Thompson's Phillies & former Met Zack Wheeler (16-6) second most wins in the NL.

In the top of the 1st, with one out the pesty Trea Turner singled & advanced on Tylor Megill's wild pitch. Bryce Harper then struck out looking. Harper would strike out three times on the night. Alec Bohm then singled scoring Turner with the game's first run.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Mark Vientos connected for a two out double, his 22nd of the year. The hot hitting Tyrone Taylor then singled to left field tying up the game. For Taylor he has hit safely in nine of his last ten games, batting .414 with five extra base hits & four RBIs in that time.

From there it was pitching, Tylor Megill was removed after four innings, allowing a run on four hits, two walks & six strike outs. Phil Maton gave the Mets two scoreless innings. Since coming to the Mets Maton has posted a 2.78 ERA with opponents' batting just .167 against him.

For the Phillies, Zack Wheeler got to the bottom of the 6th inning when Brandon Nimmo collected the biggest hit of the night, one of his many big hits on the season, maybe the biggest so far, as he homered to right field putting the Mets up 2-1. For Nimmo it was his 22nd career high HR & his team leading 87th RBI.

Nimmo had now driven in at least one run in his last five games, with three HRs six runs scored & nine RBIs.

Jose Butto came on in the 7th, striking out JT Realmuto, getting Brandon Marsh to ground out
then struck out Kody Clemens to end the inning.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza then rolled the dice, bringing in Edwin Diaz in the 8th inning to face the toughest part of the Phillies line up & to get a six out save.

In the 8th he struck out Kyle Schwarber looking, Trea Turner then singled as he collected two of
the Phillies five hits on the night. He stole second & eventually third. But Diaz struck out Bryce Harper & Alec Bohm grounded to short to end the inning.

In the nail-biting 9th, Diaz got the first out, then walked Bryson Scott & he stole second easily. JT Realmuto then went down swinging for his second K of the night. Then Diaz walked Brandon Marsh & he stole second putting the go-ahead run in scoring position. But he ended the game striking out Cody Clemens.

For Edwin Diaz it was just the second time he notched a six out save. In the two innings he allowed no runs on one hit, two walks & four strike outs.

Quotes- Carlos Mendoza: "We've been protecting him the whole year. And now it's big boy time. He's our guy".

The Mets took three of four from the Phils denying them of clinching the NL East at Citi Field.

On the final home stand of the regular season, the Mets went 6-1.

In September they are 14-5, reaching 18 games over .500 at 87-69. They are second in the wild card race, same record as Arizona but ahead due to a better record in head-to-head regular season action. They remain two games ahead of the Braves as they head to Atlanta for a three-game series.

Trivia: On this day the 2024 Chicago White Sox tied the 1962 expansion New York Mets record with 120 season losses.
