Remembering Mets History (1962): "Yo la Tengo- I Got It!"

1962 Mets centerfielder Richie Ashburn was a having a hard time playing for the expansion team that lost 120 games.  Ashburn didn't exactly come from winning teams, in his years with the Phillies his clubs only finished over .500 four times. He was a member of the Phillies 1950 Whiz Kids that won a pennant but were swept in the World Series. Ashburn then played two years with the Cubs, finishing in seventh place both times before joining the Mets. But Ashburn was a good hitter, batting .308 lifetime's getting elected to the Hall of Fame. He led the league in hits three times & won two batting titles. Ashburn led the league in walks & on base % four times, triples twice & once in stolen bases.  He was also a fine outfielder, who was almost never out of the line up. Daryl Boston: Early 1990's Mets Outfielder (1990 - 1992)

Daryl Lamont Boston was born on January 4, 1963 in Cincinnati Ohio. Daryl's father Henry, played in the Negro Leagues with the Cincinnati Tigers.  He also had two brothers, a twin who played minor league ball & another who played Independent League baseball for 16 years. Daryl Boston grew up a fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Big Red Machine. The speedy outfielder Daryl was a first-round draft pick, out of high school for the Chicago White Sox (7th pick overall) in 1981. By 1983, he was stealing bases & hitting for power, with 20 HRs & 20 steals between AA & AAA ball. In 1984 at AAA Denver, he hit .312 with 19 triples & 40 stolen bases.  MLB Career: In 1984, Boston was called up to the White Sox, in May making his MLB debut, in a game against the Texas Rangers. David Cone: The Mets Years (1987 - 1992) (2003)

David Brian Cone was born January 2, 1963, in Kansas City Missouri. He grew up a Royals fan and his idol was Royals 1970's pitcher Dennis Leonard. The six foot one, right-handed Cone was selected in the third round of the 1981 draft by his hometown K.C. Royals.  In 1982 he won 16 games (16-3) with a 2.08 ERA between Ft. Myers & Charleston. He posted losing records the next two season, before going 8-4 at AAA Omaha in 1986.  MLB Career: Cone was brought up to the big leagues in 1986 making eleven brief relief appearances for the Royals. Just as Spring Training was ending in 1987, he was traded along with Chris Jelic to the New York Mets for Ed Hearn, Rick Anderson and Mauro Gozzo. The Royals owner later called it the worst trade in the team's history. Reed Garrett: Mets Pitcher (2023 - 2024)

Reed Garrett was born January 2nd, 1993, in Henrico Virginia. The six foot two, right hander attended high school at historic Richmond. . Military School: Reed then attended  the Virginia Military Institute, which is the oldest public military college in the US.  There he pitched for the Keydets baseball team getting drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 16th round (486th pick overall) of the 2014 draft. Reed spent 2014 & 2015 at the ball level reaching AAA Round Rock for one game the following year. He spent the next two seasons in the AA Texas League & the AAA Pacific Coast League.  In 2019 he was drafted (Rule V) away by the Detroit Tigers. He was invited to Spring Training & made the roster north. MLB Career: On March 29th he debuted pitching a scoreless inning of relief in a 6-0 loss at Toronto. On April 1st, he pitched in New York & struck out two batters in 1.1 innings of work. He made 13 appearances giving up 15 earned runs with a 8.22 ERA before ...
