Jose Quintana: 2024 Mets Wild Card Team Pitcher (2023- 2024)

Jose Guillermo Quintana was born January 24th, 1989, in Columbia. In 2006 the six foot one, left hander was signed by the New York Mets as an international free agent.

After his first season he was suspended for violating MLB's drug policy & was released. In 2009 he was signed by the AL New York club then let go to free agency two years later.

In 2011 he was signed by the Chicago White Son where he'd pitch for parts of six seasons. From 2013 to 2015 he won nine games each season.

2016 All Star: In 2016 he won a career high 13 games (13-12) with a 3.12 ERA making his first & only All-Star Team. He pitched the top of the 5th inning allowing a double to Will Myers in the American League's 4-2 win at Petco Park.

That year he became the first White Sox pitcher since Wilbur Wood in the early 1970's to make at least 30 starts post 200 or more innings & strike out 160 batters.

In his first seven starts, Quintana was 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA. In 21 of his starts Jose allowed two runs or less tying him for third best in that category in the AL.

From the south side of Chicago, he moved to the north side pitching for the Cubs for parts of four seasons (2017-2020). Quintana matched his season high 13 wins twice with Cubs going an overall 33-23 in his time there.

In Game #5 he was the losing pitcher, making it only into the 3rd inning, getting charged with six runs. Three of the runs were charged to him when Hector Rondon gave up a grand slam to Enrique Hernandez. Hernandez had also homered off Quintana in the 2nd inning.

In 2018 the Cubs & Brewers ended the season in a tie. On October 1st, Quintana started the tie breaking game allowing one run over six innings.  RBIs from Lorenzo Cain & Ryan Braun in the 8th inning won the game for Milwaukee.

From 2021-2022 he pitched for the Angles, Cardinals Giants & Pirates going 6-11.

In December 2022, Quintina signed a two-year $26 million deal with the New York Mets. Quintana is only the second Mets player after Dilson Herrera to be born in Columbia.

Mets Career: Quintana's Mets career didn't start off well. In his first appearance in Spring Training, he was diagnosed with a stress factor & benign legion in his left rib cage. He missed over three months of the season & when he arrived, they were ten games below .500 in what was a very disappointing year.

On July 20th, Quintana made his Mets debut & took a loss to the Chicago WhiteSon. On July 26th, he took his second loss in the subway series in the Bronx, allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings. Quintana would start out at 0-4 into mid-August.

On July 29th, he earned his fifth win in his last six decisions with a victory over the Twins in Minnesota. With the exception of the loss in Colorado he had allowed two runs or less in eight of his last nine starts.

As the Mets wining continued in August, Quintana's did not. From August 4th to August 25th, he went 0-3 with a 6.33 ERA giving up 19 runs, four HRs in five starts.

26.2 Scoreless Innings: But Jose turned things around once again. From August 31st to September 18th as the Mets battled for a wild card spot, Quintana had his best streak of his Mets career. In four starts he was 4-0 allowing just one earned run in 25.2 innings pitched for a 0.35 ERA.

In the 4th he gave up a double & a walk, then a fielder's choice by Alec Bohm brought in the game's first run. But it was all he gave up holding them to a run on two hits over five innings. Francisco Lindor's 6th inning grand slam HR led the way for the Mets series clinching win advancing them to the NLCS.
